Emojis: A Grapholinguistic Approach

The present article stands at the interface of CMC research and grapholinguistics. After outlining which features are typical of the writing of pri vate text messages, the focus of the first part of the paper (Sections 2 and 3) lies on the use of emojis. Notably, emoji use is not-as is commonly done-analyzed under a pragmatic perspective, but grapholinguistically, at the graphetic and graphematic levels: emojis are conceptualized as visual shapes that may assume graphematic functions within a given writing system. In the second part (Section 4), it is underlined that all variants of written digital communication (such as the use of emojis, but also all other characters) are made possible only due to the Unicode Consortium's decisions; this, finally, is argued to have farreaching consequences for the future of writing.

The rise of internet gave birth to a method of communication we recognize emoticons then evolved to emojis presently. The emojis have become the shortest version of expressing messages non-verbally.Sometimespeople even judge the attitude of others to the kind of emoji's they use.This has become a modern trend in communication. The purpose of this research is to study the influence of emojis on communication language.The objective of the study theawareness, perception and the usage pattern of emojisin various communication platforms like E-mails, Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter and Instagram by youth. The preference given to emojis over the text communication is increasing. The study also brings awareness among people about the importance and the misinterpretations happening because of emojis among youth. The methodology proposed in this study is Quantitative method through survey technique and the findings would be graphically represented. The survey would be conducted among 200 students between the age group of 18-23 at Mysore.The overall approach of this study is to understand the impact of emoticons on students in their daily life.The researchers mean to measure the awareness, perception, and recall-ability and usage pattern of emoticons by the students on E-mails, Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter and Instagram etc. Excessive usage of emojis has turned it into a form of stickers, badges, key chains, pillows, bags etc. The final phase includes the need to understand how the recipients understand the message and to be aware that it may differ from the intended meaning. Emojisreduce the written form of communication and also have certain subtle nuances. The research paper would suggest the appropriate use of emojiseffectively in the communication resolving its negative impact.
Beyond the Alphabet – Communication with Emojis

The paper provides an overview of the functions of emojis in everyday written communication – either used to complement or to replace text. The first chapter presents the current research literature on this topic and addresses the differences between unicode emojis and the former ASCII-signs. Then we discuss a question hotly debated by the public: May emojis be considered the basis of a new universal language? After having shown on both the lexical and the grammatical level that this cannot be the case we move on to the question whether, within our alphabetic system of writing, emojis may be used as additional graphic signs. The last chapter offers some examples of WhatsApp messages containing emojis in the various functions discussed before (as allographs and ideograms, for instance). Furthermore, a frequency analysis based on the Swiss WhatsApp corpus shows the distribution of emojis in these data.
