Greenways + Streets Project Manager Job Description

What we’re looking for:

LivableStreets seeks a thoughtful and thorough project manager to manage community engagement for transportation and greenway projects and to advocate for street safety, reliable and affordable public transit, and community-oriented greenways.

Who we are and what we do:

For nearly 20 years LivableStreets has been transforming Metro Boston’s streets by advocating for innovative and equitable transportation solutions that are safe, affordable, and enjoyable – making our community more connected and livable (via transit, housing, and greenways) for everyone. LivableStreets is on a committed path to becoming an anti-racist organization, and we are seeking an individual who will uphold these values and embed anti-racism at the heart of their work.

What the Greenways + Streets Project Manager will do:

Reporting to the Co-Executive Director, the Project Manager will have both internal and external facing responsibilities. The Project Manager’s primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Municipal Advocacy
    • Lead community engagement efforts and project management for specific priority greenway and transit projects (this involves building relationships with community partners, identifying community outreach strategies, coordinating project timelines and scheduling meetings, developing and implementing outreach activities, tracking project budgets)
    • Lead community focused research for specific priority transit and greenway projects (this involves building relationships with community stakeholders, designing and implementing data collection strategies, and leading data analysis efforts)
    • Assist with community engagement efforts and internal project management for larger priority greenway + transportation projects
  • Policy Advocacy:
    • Support advocacy related to street safety, traffic fatalities and Vision Zero work
    • Collaborate with internal and external colleagues and partner coalitions to support advocacy efforts and advance transportation, greenway, and street safety initiatives across Greater Boston

Other job responsibilities include:

  • Representing LivableStreets at public events and meetings
  • Collaborating with the Co-Executive Director to cultivate effective partnerships with partner organizations and, if relevant, funders and donors
  • Collaborating with staff to produce written and digital external communications, including email alerts and newsletters, social media posts, website updates, etc.

Day-to-day, these responsibilities might look like:

  • Responding to emails from other advocacy organizations, funders, and nonprofit groups to coordinate work towards common aims
  • Organizing, hosting, and executing events that bring people together to workshop ideas for our priority projects
  • Meeting with internal and external partners, including City of Boston staff, about shared projects and advocacy efforts
  • Coordinating social media responses and comment letters regarding traffic fatalities and street safety issues

The ideal candidate is:

  • organized, detail-oriented, willing to learn on the go, and able to independently manage multiple complex projects.
  • Has strong skills and experience in project management and community engagement
  • Has experience across some combination of the following fields: urban planning, active transportation, transit, public parks and green spaces, community advocacy, environmental justice and climate justice
  • Is a good listener, able to empathize with a variety of community challenges and lived experiences
  • Has expertise around or is willing to learn about anti-gentrification and anti-racist practices
  • Excited about a hybrid work environment (this position will involve a mixture of remote and in-person work across Greater Boston)

Preferred skills, qualifications and other requirements:

  • At least 3 years of experience (this could be professional experience in related fields or experience in unpaid community advocacy on related topics): You have experience in the fields of transportation, urban planning, housing, land use, landscape architecture, public health, environmentalism, or government. You have a minimum of 3 years of experience managing groups of people and/or initiatives/programs.
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to anti-racism + equity: You are committed to anti-racism and equity work. Even if you are early in your anti-racist journey, you understand that your own identities impact how you approach your work. You understand that decisions about highways, transportation, the location of public space, and the access to housing are deeply impacted by systemic racism and you are up to the challenge of building towards just communities.
  • Enjoy building relationships: You enjoy connecting with people, particularly people with lived experiences different from your own. You enjoy cultivating and maintaining relationships through consistent meetings, formal and informal conversations, and amplifying community voices to those in power.
  • Be open to new ideas: You are willing to challenge your personal perceptions and ideas and remain open to new perspectives. You acknowledge that all people contain expertise, even when they don’t have a fancy professional title.
  • Comfort managing complex projects and initiatives: You feel comfortable taking initiative, thinking across disciplines, and creatively resolving problems. You have the ability to execute a number of diverse projects simultaneously, but also know when to ask for help.
  • Have technical experience (or be willing to learn): You have some familiarity in a combination of the following or are willing to learn: quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods; ArcGIS, other mapping software; Adobe Illustrator/InDesign.
  • Experience with research design and data analysis is a plus but is not required: experience with research design (i.e. survey and focus group design and administration) and data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative) is helpful but not required
  • Skills communicating in languages other than English are a plus but not required: fluency in multiple languages is very helpful for community outreach, especially fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, and Cape Verdean Creole

Working Conditions:

  • LivableStreets has a hybrid work environment and this position will involve a mixture of remote and in-person work. We anticipate an average week involving at least 2 days of in-person work to support outreach events and partner meetings. In-person work days will involve commuting to different neighborhoods in Boston and Cambridge.
  • This job involves occasionally working outdoors to engage people on the street as part of community outreach efforts. LivableStreets follows the City of Boston’s recommendations around heat advisories, inclement weather, etc. and does not require staff to be outdoors in extreme weather.
  • The Project Manager will occasionally work outside regular 9-5 hours, including 2-3 evenings and/or weekends a month for work-related meetings, events, and public presentations.
  • LivableStreets requires all staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Exceptions will be provided for medical or religious reasons.

This is a full-time, one-year term position with the possibility for renewal. Our organization is going through a strategic planning process that may result in new organizational structures, which is why the position is currently structured as a one-year contract. We anticipate that there will likely be space for this person to remain with LivableStreets after the one year mark, but roles and responsibilities may shift as a result of the strategic planning process.

The annual salary range for this position is $65,000 -$70,000. Benefits include health care, dental care, a $75 per month transportation stipend, paid vacation, and a commitment to professional development.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and 3 references to careers@livablestreets.info by 5 pm EST on Thursday, August 29. Early applications are encouraged.
